The Rising Cost of Groceries and the Growing Need for Food Rescue in Northwest Florida

As 2025 progresses, the rising cost of groceries continues to place immense pressure on families throughout Northwest Florida. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida ranks among the most expensive states in the nation for groceries, with average weekly costs now exceeding $287 per household, and nearly $340 per week for families with children. For many in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, these expenses are simply out of reach—especially for seniors on fixed incomes, working families earning just above assistance thresholds, and individuals already burdened by housing and transportation costs.

In this environment, Emerald Coast Food Rescue plays a vital role as both a bridge and a safety net—linking food surplus to food insecurity, and transforming potential waste into nutrition and relief. Our daily operations rescue thousands of pounds of fresh meats, produce, dairy, and pantry staples from local grocery and retail partners. Every pound of food rescued is distributed the same day to over 45 local food programs, ensuring that it reaches families quickly and safely.

Through the end of the third quarter of 2025, Emerald Coast Food Rescue has distributed more than 2.35 million pounds of food, placing us well ahead of last year’s record pace. This marks a continued trend of growth—reflecting not only increased community demand but also our expanding partnerships with retail donors, food banks, and local organizations. Each month, our three refrigerated trucks move an average of 200,000 pounds of food across both counties, connecting resources where they are needed most.

The impact of this work reaches far beyond the numbers. Every rescued pound represents hope for a parent trying to stretch a paycheck, nourishment for a child who might otherwise go hungry, and stability for a senior choosing between groceries and medication. Food rescue in Northwest Florida is not simply a logistical operation—it is a lifeline that strengthens the community’s capacity to withstand economic stress and rising costs of living.

In Walton County in particular, where rural isolation compounds food access challenges, our partnerships with agencies like Cornerstone Church Pantry in DeFuniak Springs, Open Door Pantry, Seventh Day Adventist, The Matrix C.O.C. and Caring & Sharing of South Walton ensure that residents in remote areas receive the same level of support as those in larger towns. In Okaloosa County, collaborations with programs such as Crestview Resource Center and Children in Crisis extend our reach to vulnerable youth, veterans, and families in transition.

As grocery prices rise faster than wages, food rescue is becoming not just an emergency response but a cornerstone of community resilience. Our work reduces food waste, lowers environmental impact, and maximizes the usefulness of every donated resource. At the same time, it relieves financial pressure on local households, allowing families to redirect limited funds toward essentials like rent, transportation, and healthcare.

The need for accessible, nutritious food is urgent—and growing. Emerald Coast Food Rescue’s mission is to meet that need with efficiency, compassion, and accountability. Every partnership, every rescued pallet, and every delivery strengthens a network that now touches tens of thousands of lives across Okaloosa and Walton Counties.

Together with our partners, donors, and volunteers, we are not only filling plates—we are building a stronger, healthier, and more connected Emerald Coast.

DONATE TODAY

The cost to connect one meal, or pound of food, to a local food program, costs Emerald Coast Food Rescue 13 cents.  Typically for every $1 donated to our work, our refrigerated food trucks are able to deliver 7.5 free meals to a local food program.

Emerald Coast Food Rescue has an exceptional opportunity in 2025 to have the impact of every individual contribution under $15,000 doubled, up until a total of $100,000 is matched. This is the second year our head benefactor is making this generous offer to appeal for more direct public support.

Food programs in Northwest Florida truly rely on our ability to meet an ever-increasing need in our community. Numerous recipient programs of Emerald Coast Food Rescue hand out over 300 food boxes a month depending entirely on ECFR’s food deliveries. The value our operation provides to a community network of nonprofits, churches, and food programs is indisputably a lifeline to thousands of struggling local families and households.

Emerald Coast Food Rescue has connected 1.59 million pounds of rescued food to 45 feeding programs in Okaloosa and Walton County within the first six months of 2025. This distribution reflects not only the geographic spread of our partners but also our intentional focus on rural and high-need communities. As food insecurity continues to impact both counties, ECFR’s daily, no-cost deliveries ensure that fresh, nutritious food is consistently reaching the people and places that need it most – filling gaps and strengthening local response systems.

New Recipient Food Program – Buscando Al Perdido

One of Emerald Coast Food Rescue’s top priorities this year is to ensure that the most underserved members of our community – especially those facing documentation challenges, language barriers, or cultural stigmas – have safe, dignified access to fresh food. Many families hesitate to seek help due to fear, misunderstanding, or past experiences that made them feel unwelcome. Our goal is to change that. We’re proud to welcome Buscando Al Perdido, a new church-based program in Fort Walton Beach, to our recipient network. This dedicated team is creating a safe food haven for Spanish-speaking households and others who may be excluded from traditional assistance programs. Through our daily deliveries, Buscando Al Perdido will now receive a regular supply of rescued food to distribute directly to their community – no questions asked. This partnership is part of a larger expansion effort. In the first half of 2025 alone, ECFR has added five new recipient programs to our delivery routes. Buscando Al Perdido is the first to directly address language and documentation-related barriers, and it marks a meaningful step toward making food assistance more inclusive, culturally responsive, and accessible for all.

Harbor Docks Charity Auction Raises $10k for Food Rescue and Hunger Relief!

The 38th Annual Charity Auction at Harbor Docks last month was a wonderful success. The event that raises funds for both Take a Kid Fishing and Destin Harvest had a great turnout with tons of exciting items that were donated by local businesses and artists.
A total of $62,000 was raised that evening, with $10k awarded to Destin Harvest!

Having recovered from several costly repairs on our refrigerated food trucks this summer, this support could not have come at a better time for our operation.

We are tremendously grateful for Harbor Docks continued support for our program throughout each year.

For the year, DH distributed roughly 570k lbs of frozen meats, 425k lbs produce, 330k lbs bakery and bread, 190k lbs non-perishable / dry goods, 55k lbs of dairy, and 20k pounds of frozen foods.

Please Consider Making a Contribution

DH struggles to maintain consistent funding after the holidays. We are still recovering from expensive truck repairs last quarter. DH needed those funds for fuel, regular maintenance, insurance, drivers wages, and other operation costs.

If you are not already supporting DH on an annual or monthly basis, I would like to encourage you to consider the impact your donation would have locally on those who are in real need of food assistance throughout the year. DH currently has a matching opportunity for all contributions under $15k. Meaning for every dollar you can donate to DH this year, it will be matched by our private benefactor. This is a tremendous way to maximize your support for DH and the many feeding programs served in Okaloosa and Walton County.

Please consider setting up a monthly or one-time contribution today at

Recipient Programs Collectively Contribute $9,500 to DH

At the last quarter of 2023, DH sent a soft request to recipient feeding programs to raise contributions for DH. From that simple request, DH’s programs raised a total of $9,508 for DH’s operation!

A huge thank you to Shalimar United Methodist Church (Bread House), St Andrews by the Sea (Blue Door Ministries), Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Harvest House, Fresh Start, One Hopeful Place, Westminster Presbyterian Church, S4P Synergy Inc, Youth Village, and Seventh Day Adventist of Crestview for their willingness to give back to DH in 2023.
