As 2025 progresses, the rising cost of groceries continues to place immense pressure on families throughout Northwest Florida. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Florida ranks among the most expensive states in the nation for groceries, with average weekly costs now exceeding $287 per household, and nearly $340 per week for families with children. For many in Okaloosa and Walton Counties, these expenses are simply out of reach—especially for seniors on fixed incomes, working families earning just above assistance thresholds, and individuals already burdened by housing and transportation costs.

In this environment, Emerald Coast Food Rescue plays a vital role as both a bridge and a safety net—linking food surplus to food insecurity, and transforming potential waste into nutrition and relief. Our daily operations rescue thousands of pounds of fresh meats, produce, dairy, and pantry staples from local grocery and retail partners. Every pound of food rescued is distributed the same day to over 45 local food programs, ensuring that it reaches families quickly and safely.

Through the end of the third quarter of 2025, Emerald Coast Food Rescue has distributed more than 2.35 million pounds of food, placing us well ahead of last year’s record pace. This marks a continued trend of growth—reflecting not only increased community demand but also our expanding partnerships with retail donors, food banks, and local organizations. Each month, our three refrigerated trucks move an average of 200,000 pounds of food across both counties, connecting resources where they are needed most.

The impact of this work reaches far beyond the numbers. Every rescued pound represents hope for a parent trying to stretch a paycheck, nourishment for a child who might otherwise go hungry, and stability for a senior choosing between groceries and medication. Food rescue in Northwest Florida is not simply a logistical operation—it is a lifeline that strengthens the community’s capacity to withstand economic stress and rising costs of living.

In Walton County in particular, where rural isolation compounds food access challenges, our partnerships with agencies like Cornerstone Church Pantry in DeFuniak Springs, Open Door Pantry, Seventh Day Adventist, The Matrix C.O.C. and Caring & Sharing of South Walton ensure that residents in remote areas receive the same level of support as those in larger towns. In Okaloosa County, collaborations with programs such as Crestview Resource Center and Children in Crisis extend our reach to vulnerable youth, veterans, and families in transition.

As grocery prices rise faster than wages, food rescue is becoming not just an emergency response but a cornerstone of community resilience. Our work reduces food waste, lowers environmental impact, and maximizes the usefulness of every donated resource. At the same time, it relieves financial pressure on local households, allowing families to redirect limited funds toward essentials like rent, transportation, and healthcare.

The need for accessible, nutritious food is urgent—and growing. Emerald Coast Food Rescue’s mission is to meet that need with efficiency, compassion, and accountability. Every partnership, every rescued pallet, and every delivery strengthens a network that now touches tens of thousands of lives across Okaloosa and Walton Counties.

Together with our partners, donors, and volunteers, we are not only filling plates—we are building a stronger, healthier, and more connected Emerald Coast.
DONATE TODAY
The cost to connect one meal, or pound of food, to a local food program, costs Emerald Coast Food Rescue 13 cents. Typically for every $1 donated to our work, our refrigerated food trucks are able to deliver 7.5 free meals to a local food program.
Emerald Coast Food Rescue has an exceptional opportunity in 2025 to have the impact of every individual contribution under $15,000 doubled, up until a total of $100,000 is matched. This is the second year our head benefactor is making this generous offer to appeal for more direct public support.
Every $1 donated right now = 15 meals connected for free to local food programs
