Food Insecurity in Florida is Devastating
Emerald Coast Food Rescue is addressing a significant and growing challenge in Northwest Florida: the persistent lack of access to affordable, nutritious food among low and moderate-income households, particularly in rural areas of Okaloosa and Walton Counties. Despite the region’s natural beauty and economic growth in some sectors, many families face food insecurity driven by high living costs, limited transportation options, and the absence of affordable grocery outlets in rural communities.
Florida is among the most expensive states for groceries, placing added strain on household budgets already stretched thin by housing, healthcare, and transportation costs. Rural communities in Walton and Okaloosa Counties are especially vulnerable, with geographic isolation compounding barriers to food access. Food insecurity affects not only physical health—contributing to chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease—but also mental well-being, educational outcomes, and economic stability.
Local food programs depend greatly on Emerald Coast Food Rescue’s weekly deliveries to continue serving higher numbers each month. Based on survey data provided by recipient agencies this year, Emerald Coast Food Rescue collectively supplements over 200,000 meals each month in Okaloosa and Walton County. Emerald Coast Food Rescue’s recipient programs provide food assistance collectively to over 17,000 people in these counties monthly. Recipients receive five to six meals on average from a feeding program whenever they receive a box or bag of items. Many of these programs rely heavily, if not fully, on Emerald Coast Food Rescue’s weekly donations.
